Under Deck Ceilings Create More Living Space

The do-it-yourself boom and the renovation boom have made possible another good idea for home residences. The new product for home builders is called the under deck ceiling. This product and this system were created for those innocuous spaces below deck.

First things first, though: what is a deck? Decks are outdoor structures that are built as elevated, flat platforms. These are constructed for the purpose of extending and expanding the living spaces in a house. Little did we suspect that the area below this platform could be transformed into a functional place too. Now there is a system to keep these spaces dry and usable.

Some manufacturers use vinyl as material, some use aluminum panels. Most of the old systems were corrugated sheets, while new ones are usually flat panels. These are designed with a system for water flow such as drains, spouts, and channels. Some are specifically designed for the second story deck in a house, while some are not. They are modular and snap-on, to be attached to the joists in an existing deck. Some are specially designed for the do it yourself builder, while others need professional help to install. Even with a DIY under deck ceiling, you still need to make sure that your materials are good quality and sturdy for your ceiling to last for years.

Under deck ceilings, once installed, create perfect outdoor spaces for a myriad of uses. Once the problem of rainwater runoff and melting snow have been addressed, then walls, paneling, or screens can be added on, or the wide open space could be retained. An airy, sunny, and dry outdoor space has a lot of possibilities. Spaces like these are important for the inhabitants of a house. One cannot get too much of sun and air. The under deck space can now be transformed from a dark damp and moldy area into a healthily dry and light alternative.

These spaces could be transformed into outdoor lounging areas, with rugs, tables, chairs, and other outdoor patio furniture. This space would be a bit more private than that above deck, and could be a semi-private alcove. You can also use garden lights to add some lighting to the area around your porch or deck so that it isn’t so bright, as with a flood or spot light. If another living room in the house is not attractive to you, the space could always serve as a garden shed, where all your gardening tools will be protected from the elements of rain, sun, or snow. If the garden is situated near this deck space, then it is ideal as garden tool storage. An avid gardener needs to store his tools in an accessible storage space for convenience.

There will be many ideas for the use of such a space, especially today when space has become a premium. With under deck ceiling systems, you gain premium space with minimum effort and expense. This is a better deal than constructing a garden shed from scratch, or building an extension such as an additional room. The essence of good planning and design is to make use of any existing areas as living spaces 1st, before thinking of building more. Sometimes this principle is overlooked in the construction craze and the renovation boom. This system is a more practical and cost efficient alternative that every homeowner should look at.
